Lode Runner is a classic puzzle-platformer game originally released in 1983 for the Apple II and subsequently for various platforms, including the Commodore 64. Developed by Douglas E. Smith, players control a character who must collect all the gold in a level while avoiding enemies, known as 'Bungelings', using hand-to-hand combat and strategically digging holes to trap them. The game is renowned for its challenging levels, each presenting unique puzzles to solve. It features more than 150 levels and a level editor, allowing players to design their own stages. With simple controls but deep gameplay, Lode Runner became a milestone in the puzzle-platformer genre and retains a devoted fan base to this day.
